Q: 5/27/25 Why does the church pay $ for non-Catholics to attend our Catholic school?
A: There are 2 basic reasons Catholic churches pay part of the cost for non-Catholics to attend their Catholic schools. First, we are called to evangelize all who are non-Catholic and it is believed by many that this is a way to share the Catholic faith with them. There are instances of non-Catholics converting to Catholicism after attending a Catholic school, but it is unknown how many. The second reason is a belief that without non-Catholic students in the school, there would not be enough students to keep the school viable. There are certain set costs for any school and if those are divided by a larger number of students then the cost per student is lower. It is better to subsidize non-Catholic students than to let the school close. Whether these reasons are true or not remains to be seen, but they are commonly held by many.
